Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue Massage focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronic aches and pains, improves athletic recovery and performance, lowers high blood pressure, breaks up scar tissue, reduces stress, anxiety and muscle tension, all while improving and reducing arthritis symptoms.
Are you noticing that your body is suffering from deep musculoskeletal issues? This can often lead to extreme discomfort and inflammation throughout the body. With Deep Tissue Massage, we aim to increase blood flow to the area to perpetuate healing and reduce inflammation of the damaged tissues.
Patients who benefit from a deep tissue massage in Toronto include:
Individuals with sports injuries
People who suffer from fibromyalgia
Individuals with high blood pressure
Those with painful tennis elbow
Individuals with plantar fasciitis
What To Expect
Your massage therapist will begin your appointment with an in-depth conversation discussing your problem areas and areas of concern. At this point, you can express any limitations or discomfort you may have. That way, your therapist can create a customized treatment plan tailored to suit your needs.
Your therapist will instruct you to lay on your back or stomach. We recommend only undressing to a point where you feel comfortable; however, the area that needs to be massaged must be exposed for maximum effectiveness.
The therapist will begin slowly and will increase pressure as time continues on. If at any point you feel uncomfortable, communicate this with your therapist and they will vary their technique in a way that is most suitable for you.
The Difference Between Swedish and Deep Tissue
Though deep tissue massage and Swedish massage are similar, there are some main differences between the two modalities. Swedish massages are usually more relaxation-focused, whereas deep tissue massages are used to treat an underlying pain. This results in Swedish massages being lighter on pressure than the deep tissue massage.
Furthermore, the area of focus with both of these massage techniques varies greatly. Where Swedish massages manipulate the most superficial layer of muscle, deep tissue massage treats deeper into the fascia and manipulates tendons, muscles and joins.
Are there any risks that come with a deep tissue massage?
Little risks are associated with massage; however, some patients may not enjoy the firm pressure that we use during deep tissue. We do ask that if you have any history of blood clotting disorders or if you’re taking blood thinners, then you tell our therapist so we can provide the safest version of treatment for you.
Furthermore, if you’re undergoing cancer treatment (such as radiation or chemotherapy), it’s best to tell your therapist. Your bones may be more fragile and thus we should be more gentle with pressure.
